Tech Tip of the Day: How to Create Custom Facebook Pages
Posted on | October 20, 2010 | No Comments
From Digital Inspiration:
How to Create Custom Facebook Pages
All the big brands like Coke, Starbucks, Nokia, and even Apple, maintain fan pages on Facebook that are “liked” by millions of people worldwide. These pages are designed professionally and have certain useful features.
For instance, the Apple iTunes page lets you search for apps right inside Facebook. In the case of Threadless, you can comment on your favorite T-Shirt designs without leaving Facebook while CNN has all the breaking news stories listed on its Facebook landing page.
How do they create such interesting Facebook pages? Do you really need to hire designers or skilled programmers who understand the ins-and-outs of Facebook APIs in order to build interactive and beautiful fan pages? Well, the answer is no.
Create a Customized Facebook Fan Page
Step 1: Assuming that you’ve already created a basic Facebook Page, open the Static FBML application and add it to your Facebook page.
Step 2: Go back to your Facebook Page, click the “Edit Page” link in the sidebar and again click “Edit” under the FBML section.
Step 3: This is your playground -- anything that you insert into this FBML text box will be visible on your Facebook Page. It accepts standard HTML tags so you may insert images, tables, paragraphs and more into your Facebook Page with simple markup.
Step 4: Now click “Edit” under Wall Settings and set the “Default Landing Tab for Everyone Else” to one of your new FBML boxes.

Tech Tip of the Day: How to Compress PDF Files Free of Cost
Posted on | October 19, 2010 | 1 Comment
From Tech-Geeks:
How to Compress PDF Files Free of Cost
PDF is acronym of “Portable Document Format”, an exchange method of documents formed by Adobe systems.
It is a file format which consists of objects like numbers, names, strings etc. Most of the internet users love to compress pdf files free of cost, and send them since they’re relatively bulkier than regular Word documents, and other document formats.
Tips for Compressing PDF Files
While trying to compress PDF files, whenever colors are not significant, you can easily convert it into grayscale and then the size of the file gets compressed. In some files, some documents are not of much need, so they can be easily eliminated for compression.
Now for compression, many software are available in the market. It is no more a difficult task. Companies who created PDF files have come up with compression techniques to compress PDF files as well. Nowadays, modern software is available where you can easily decompress the files required for converting into other formats. So in short when there is a scope for compression of PDF files, then it should be done.

Tip of the Day: Turn Your iPod Touch Into an iPhone
Posted on | October 18, 2010 | 1 Comment
From LifeHacker:
How to Turn Your iPod touch into an iPhone: 4G Edition
The latest iPhone and iPod touch are nearly identical devices, ignoring the pesky reality that the latter isn't a phone. We can fix that. Here's how to turn your iPod touch into a viable (and cheaper) iPhone alternative out of the box.
Back in the day, turning your iPod touch into an iPhone required a jailbreak, but now, thanks to some wonderful apps and other tools, using your iPod touch as an iPhone alternative is a piece of cake.
What You'll Need
What you need is actually kind of obvious, but here's a quick overview:
* An iPod touch - We'll be concentrating on the latest (4G) hardware, but in most cases this guide will be applicable to any iPod touch.
* A VoIP App - We've already mentioned Skype and Line2, but we'll take a look at additional options
* A Constant Wi-Fi Connection - If you're looking to have a fancy home phone, your home Wi-Fi network will do just fine. We're going to take it a little further, however, and take a look at actually using your iPod touch no matter where you go.
* Extra: An iPod-compatible Headset - Because the iPod touch isn't supposed to be a phone, you'll want to make sure you have a headset unless you don't mind always talking on speakerphone. Apple only includes earbuds, so you'll have to go out and buy a pair (of Apple's or anyones, Bluetooth or wired). While you can technically use newer iPod touches without a headset, it's not designed to be a phone and a headset will make everything much better.

Tip of the Day: Gmail Big Emails - How to Find Them
Posted on | October 15, 2010 | No Comments
From Digital Inspiration:
Locate all the Big Emails in your Gmail Account
What would you do if your Gmail Inbox is reaching its storage limit and you urgently need to free up some space else all your incoming email messages will be returned to the sender?
You’ll either have to buy some extra storage space from Google or another solution is that you find all the emails in your Inbox that have really big attachments and put them into the trash.
Gmail doesn’t offer a way to search and sort email messages by size but you can use a tool like Microsoft Outlook or IMAP Size to sort your mails by the size criteria on the desktop. They connect to your Gmail account via IMAP and therefore when you delete an emails with big attachments locally, the same happens in your online inbox as well.
If you however find the above workarounds a little complicated, there’s an even simpler method now that won’t even require you download or install anything – it’s called findbigmail.com.

The Poor Man's Guide to Using Free Software to Prevent & Remove Viruses & Malware is exactly what the title says it is. Millions of PC users shouldn't have to pay PC technicians their hard-earned money to do something they could otherwise do themselves if they just had the proper tools and guidance.

This guide is the culmination of detailed instructions given by the author, a PC security expert since 1995, to over 4,000 customers since 2001.
What's inside the guide?
Unlike all those other so-called guides, The Poor Man's Guide does not offer less than the title says it offers. There are no vague references that leave the reader asking "What does that mean?" or "Did I miss a step somewhere?". This guide isn't full of unfunny phrases to keep readers interested. And it isn't full of boring techical jargon. This guide gets directly to the point of teaching you how to prevent and remove malware and viruses.
What steps does The Guide Cover?
Readers will be able to follow each individual step from download of the free software programs all the way through the advanced usage stage. Nothing is left out. There are no questions left unanswered.
The Guarantee

I'd like add a special thank you to my loyal customers for giving me the strength and the courage to develop and write The Guide.

Is FinallyFast.com a Scam?
Posted on | September 15, 2010 | No Comments
Many of us have seen the FinallyFast.com commercial. After viewing it, I was left with plenty of questions that I have found answers to from users of the program via online forums.
So here goes:
What comes with the software?
They fail to mention the “clean” install comes full of lovely trojans should you choose to pay the ridiculous 30 dollars for this garbage. The commercial for this website should never have been aired on television, millions of computers are probably infected from this program. Its one thing to report false positives...
I dont know how to remove it and I keep getting spammed errors every time i try and open it.
The folks @ finallyfast need to show me how to get a BSOD on a MAC. I MUST KNOW!
So somehow the program found a BSOD on a Mac. Impossible. Makes you think.
Is the software free?
The scan is free, but you have to download the software for the scan. Once the program installs various items it can detect, you must pay $30 to have them removed. Good work if you can get it.
And watch out. You may receive more deductions from your credit card each month.
How well does the program work?
I had tried this service once, and was really disappointed when I couldn't "clean up" my computer, and suspected that finallyfast.com's "findings" were trumped up to get me upset and eager to get these errors fixed, that I would purchase the software. WRONG! As you say, you can do this yourself. I have and still do.
It doesn't even help with this:
I installed the finallyfast.com software because I thought it would improve my acting skills.
![]()
I actually did try the free scanner on a newly installed Windows XP. And guess what? It found 215 items. This was after I performed routine maintenance to clean all temporary files, etc. One item, in particular, is only found online. I'd like to tell those guys that the PC has never been connected to the Internet.
So to put it mildly, FinallyFast.com is scammish. So beware. There are several free programs that can and and do clean up your PC to make it run faster.
Or you can read my Routine Maintenance Guide that shows you how to really make your PC run faster.
